As the leading cause of death for all age groups less than 44 years, trauma costs the United States hundreds of billions of dollars. Domestic violence, now termed intimate partner violence, is a leading cause of injury to women katsu5 resmi. Approximately 30% of all ICU admissions are for traumatic injuries. This chapter provides an overview of blunt and penetrating trauma leading to injury of the brain, thorax, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system. The chapter explains how to care patients experiencing various forms of trauma. It provides a general approach to all trauma patients and various mechanisms of trauma.
